For the Whim of It

Sometimes you see something and immediately think, Well, that makes an unreasonable amount of sense. Like car slippers. I saw a TikTok about keeping a pair in the car to change into so your heels don’t get ruined, and now I’m on the hunt for the right ones. Apparently my car needs its own footwear.

For the Whim of It is where I follow these interests into books, beauty, clothes, hobbies, home, places and experiences. Something catches my attention, I start investigating, and occasionally a passing thought develops requirements. The car slippers, for example, need to be easy to slip into and fit neatly in the car, because that’s where they’ll live. A small idea has acquired a brief.

Here you’ll find essays about the hunt, the things I try, what surprises me and whether I’d do it again. When there’s something worth linking, I’ll include it so you can follow along. I’ll also tell you whether I’ve actually tried something or am still admiring it on the internet. Those are different levels of research, however enthusiastically I conduct both.

Maybe you’ll find your next book, a class you want to take or something you didn’t know you wanted until somebody mentioned it. Maybe you’ll just enjoy watching a small curiosity become an undertaking. Either way, I’d like to see where it goes.
